Stari Grad Plain

I recently spent 8 AMAZING days in Croatia with Intrepid Travel. With only 10 in our group and our local Croatian guide we were able to navigate easily as a group, hit all the best local restaurants, get insider scoop on the best excursions, have local cultural experiences that most tour companies can't offer, have a balance of free time and guided time, and last but not least all become great friends.

I started my trip by spending 3 days in Split, an old charming town built inside the walls of Diocletian's Palace that was built in the 4th century. Of course their have been many changes since it was originally built but you still feel that old world charm with every corner you turn and every alleyway you walk down. Inside the walls are restaurants, cafe's, shops, hotels, and the friendly locals. From Split their are many excursions offered to the surrounding islands or you can participate in some of the world's best olive oil tasting and food & wine tasting. There is no surprise that Split was chosen as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

From Split we ferried over to Hvar Island, which they are calling "the new Ibiza". Hvar is home to not only great bars & restaurants, but beautiful beaches and small neighboring islands. To get off the beaten path and into the country side we went to Stari Grad, home to a 2,400 year old UNESCO protected plain that was settled by the Greeks. Here we ate dinner and drank wine in the middle of the country where all our food and wine was grown and prepared. After Hvar was Korcula Island. Korcula is a beautiful family friendly island full of beaches, local restaurants, and live music. Dubrovnik was my final destination. The highlight of Dubrovnik was walking the city walls at sunset. Seeing the town from above is absolutely breathtaking (this is also the filming location for Kings Landing in Game of Thrones!).

If you are looking for a destination that has it all then Croatia is for you. With some of the world's most stunning beaches, best Mediterranean food & wine, historical culture, popular filming locations, and friendly locals you might as well say you've landed in paradise. It's not only a great location for romance and honeymoons but it is also great for adventure travel as well. Another great option is to cruise the coast if you prefer to unpack only once.
